Reflection on Round Table
By Hudson Sellers
After a long day of work, enjoying a nice meal with some of my best friends around Gray’s table provides a much-needed outlet and boost to my spirits. The consistency of having Round Table every Tuesday adds structure to my weekly rhythms and helps break up the work week with a different kind of excitement.
Invariably, Gray asks each of us to share how we are doing that week, often requiring an unconventional response. From a convoluted metaphor about imagining yourself as a stock in the market to what type of doctor’s appointment do you feel like you are attending, we have been pushed to use our imaginations to express our feelings and discern those of the other Fellows.
Round Table can be overwhelming due to the sheer volume of people involved, as twelve Fellows plus Gray’s family of five makes for a full house. It is always joyful, but my brain sometimes struggles to focus in on one conversation or person because I am so happy to be around each one of them.
I have loved the opportunity to cook for Round Table when it’s my turn. One night I made a vegan fall soup I never would have tried otherwise - and it was delicious (especially with the chicken on the side).
Our Bible studies, cultural hermeneutics, and divisive topic discussions always stimulate my mind, and I usually leave pondering some theological idea until my exhaustion from the day catches up with me. Round Table is a core part of the Fellows experience that I will miss dearly once the year is over!
