Reflection on her Host Family

By Taylor Moore

If I am being honest, when I first heard the idea of living with something called a “host family” I was tempted to take a step back from the application process. Today, I can confidently say that living with the Splain’s has been one of the biggest blessings of this program. As the days to move in approached, my head was full of concerns about never feeling completely relaxed while living in someone else’s home, walking on eggshells around the halls, and even scared that the relationship between me and my host family just wouldn’t click. However, every single concern I had has been relieved by God’s evident kindness to me. He placed me in the house of a family who genuinely wants to be part of my life.

On Day One, I was sitting in the playroom with my host family and their two little girls playing UNO and getting a fashion show of all their princess dresses. They don’t just invite me to be part of their lives but want to be part of mine as well. They show this so graciously by checking in on me every day to ask how my day was, listening to my rants of the most random topics whether it is sharing about what we learned in class or conversations from Round Table, and some may say best of all, they even joined my weekly watching of Dancing with the Stars.

One of my favorite parts of living with the Splain’s is participating in Friday family movie night with the family where we sit down in the living room over a picnic blanket with pizza and a Disney movie on. Overall, what was once one of my biggest worries going into Fellows has truly been one of the biggest blessings of the program.
